In an unsourced interview during the Brazil Game Show, Ed Boon offers a mixed signal for those hoping for more Mortal Kombat in the near future. When asked about whether there’s any news or new Mortal Kombat projects in the future, Boon offers up an ambiguous, “Yes and no.” Oddly, his first instinct is to say that Mortal Kombat 11 is “the end of the story.” But from there he says that NetherRealm certainly isn’t done with Mortal Kombat.

The most important bit of Boon’s response is the end, however, where Boon confirms that NetherRealm has “a big surprise coming next year for Mortal Kombat.” Boon doesn’t provide any direct hints or clues about this big surprise, but just the confirmation alone should be enough to get Mortal Kombat fans excited. There’s more Mortal Kombat coming in 2020, though whether it’s related to Mortal Kombat 11 or something entirely different remains unclear.
Speculation surrounding Boon’s tease is understandably scattered. Most of the focus remains on a potential Kombat Pack 2, another round of DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 11. A past leak seemed to imply more characters were on the way, including Sheeva, Fujin, and Evil Dead’s Ash, but it remains a heavy rumor. Other ideas that have been floated include an Ultimate Mortal Kombat 11 edition, or other DLC. But again, the focus remains on Mortal Kombat 11 when Boon seems to be referencing something else entirely. After all, more Mortal Kombat 11 DLC wouldn’t exactly be surprising.
Needless to say, more Mortal Kombat is inevitable. Mortal Kombat 11 has proven a striking success, plus the brand is once again expanding into movies with a planned Mortal Kombat film release in 2021. It’s not a matter of if, but rather when and what. NetherRealm has typically alternated game releases for Mortal Kombat with its Injustice games over the past several years, so Mortal Kombat should be going on a hiatus soon. But maybe Boon’s tease implies that Mortal Kombat may remain a focus for longer than expected.
Mortal Kombat 11 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
