This much has been declared by Trevor Traub, the Producer for the Core Technology Group at NetherRealm Studios, with the developer going on to state that Mortal Kombat 11 players will be able to “slot in” augments in the gear, which provide modifiers for “either moves or gameplay recovery windows”. According to Traub, these augments can be considered as “different types of loot”, and players will acquire them at various points in the game.

After Mortal Kombat 11’s custom gear was revealed, many speculated that NetherRealm Studios would be taking a cue from its DC Comics fighting game from 2017, Injustice 2, but Traub’s statements make it seem as though the developer will be tweaking the system somewhat. As Traub said, “You can make different versions of your character. And those customizations will be seen online, but it’s not quite like Injustice 2 — your stat changes won’t all be in play online, but the cosmetic choices will be seen by other players.”

All things considered, it will be interesting to see just how in-depth the customizable aspects of Mortal Kombat 11’s gear system are going to be, as the footage released by NetherRealm Studios during the game’s Kommunity Reveal event seem to only hint at a vast array of cosmetic options. At any rate, it’s safe to say that most fans of the franchise will simply be glad that the developer is putting the ability to alter characters’ costumes into their hands, as it will provide them with a high level of replayability.

Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled to release on April 23, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
