Joker’s redesign was well-met by fans, and the hype for his release was built further by his gameplay trailer, the various Joker Easter eggs in Mortal Kombat 11, his brutalities, his fatalities, and so much more. And when players downloaded him to Mortal Kombat 11, it’s clear NetherRealm didn’t drop the ball. With the release of the Joker, it seems the studio is thus far 5/5 on its Kombat Pack, as each character has been exceptional in their own regard.

This shouldn’t be surprising, but it does set high expectations for Spawn to end this current round of DLC content on a high note and continue this pattern throughout Mortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack 2. If Joker and his predecessors are any indication, however, NetherRealm Studios should have no problem getting this done.

Mortal Kombat 11’s Spawn

Many at first lamented how long it would take Spawn to release in Mortal Kombat 11, but with Joker out of the way, the fan-favorite anti-hero will be the next to land in March. It’s a standard expectation that the end of any DLC run end it with a splash; for example, many think Smash Ultimate should have saved Crash Bandicoot for last. While Spawn was still announced ahead of time and the long wait was dreaded, players now have the hype that he’s coming next.

There is still a wait, obviously, but that means new teases for Spawn will eventually come, that his gameplay trailer will eventually come, and his fatalities and story will eventually be revealed. All of this is to say that the current Kombat Pack built up a lot of hype for the character, slowly, but now that Mortal Kombat 11 hype train is ready for full departure. This is made even better by the bevy of characters released so far.

Had Mortal Kombat 11 players been more torn over the value of previous additions like Sindel, Terminator, or even the Joker himself, then the narrative surrounding Spawn’s release would likely be significantly different. However, the quality of previous DLC releases mean players’ high expectations for Spawn will likely be met, and the best part is that it doesn’t end there.

Mortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack 2

Spawn will bring the current Kombat Pack to an end, but Kombat Pack 2 will likely be announced in 2020. There’s no ruling out a break between DLC runs, a delay between characters, or the Kombat Pack 2 failing to live up to its predecessors’ expectations, but rumors and leaks so far suggest it could be another big hit for Mortal Kombat 11.

As it stands, the most likely additions appear to be Sheeva, Fujin, and Evil Dead’s Ash Williams. This is due to a massive leak including their names alongside the Kombat Pack 1 characters, Sheeva’s role in the base game, Fujin being found in the files, and there being teases for Ash Williams (though there have also been denials for the character). To a lesser extent, there have been indications that Stryker, potentially played by John Cena, could even join the roster.

It seems likely that it would be announced sometime after Mortal Kombat 11’s Spawn release date, and there are a ton of variables as to its price, size, and more. But with Joker out now, it’s more likely to enter the conversation moving forward. Especially if Spawn lives up to the expectations set by the Joker and his predecessors, then the same would be expected of Kombat Pack 2.

Simply put, Joker effectively cements the quality of the first Kombat Pack, meaning Spawn will likely bring it a strong close and the second Kombat Pack would likely be well worth the price. This all goes a long way in keeping Mortal Kombat 11’s popularity up as 2020 carries on.

Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
