To sweeten the deal, it turns out Mortal Kombat 11’s next-generation upgrade won’t result in a lower online player-base either, with NetherRealm confirming today that the game will feature cross-generation play. That means whether fans are playing on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, or PlayStation 5, they’ll all be able to battle each other online.

“Krossplay will become Kross Generation for PlayStation & Xbox players,” NetherRealm confirms in a recent tweet, claiming that Mortal Kombat veterans can switch on cross-generation play in the game’s settings. Sadly, it seems the feature won’t be coming to PC or Nintendo Switch, exclusively sticking to both Microsoft and Sony’s console offerings. It’ll ensure that Mortal Kombat 11 remains a top-notch fighting experience when it launches for the next-gen systems, allowing players to continue going head to head with their friends regardless of their console preference.

With the Series X and PlayStation 5 finally here, several major studios have announced they’re integrating cross-generation multiplayer to ensure players are kept in the loop regardless of what system their friends own. Marvel’s Avengers, Call of Duty: Blacks Ops Cold War, Borderlands 3, Fortnite, and Destiny 2 have all made big deals out of their focus on cross-generation play, welcoming players remaining and moving on from the current generation to continue playing together. Microsoft has made a big push for the feature in particular, with cross-generation encompassing its push to make the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X as compatible as possible.

As for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, it seems cross-generation multiplayer will be more important than ever with the release date for Kombat Pack 2 drawing ever closer. The new expansion will bring 3 new characters to the game: Rambo, Mileena, and Rain. Rambo will come equipped with his weapons from the films, including a bow, a machine gun, and explosives, while Rain utilizes the power of water to pick foes apart. Returning favorite Mileena, on the other hand, has her dual-sais as well as the ability to teleport and even turn invisible. The trio of fighters will be available in a week’s time.

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate launches November 17 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
