Since Mortal Kombat 9 released in 2011, fans have seen a new game from NetherRealm every two years, as the studio has moved back and forth between its Mortal Kombat and Injustice IPs. However, Mortal Kombat 11’s release marks the breaking of that cycle, which has led to increased anticipation that a new game may be on the way soon. There was even an expectation that the new title would be announced at the Game Awards 2021. However, NetherRealm made a statement following that event that its latest game wasn’t yet ready to be shown.

Now, Ed Boon is telling fans when they might be able to expect more information on NetherRealm’s next game. As Mortal Kombat is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, many expected the announcement of a new game to join the jubilations. However, as Boon explained on Twitter, it seems that the developer wishes to keep the 30th anniversary separate from information about new games in development. “Our next game announcement will be separate from MK30,” Boon clarified on his Twitter account.

Considering that NetherRealm’s new title is being kept separate from the MK30 celebrations, some have taken this to mean that Mortal Kombat 12 won’t be the studio’s next game. Instead, to some, Injustice 3 makes the most sense, as this would keep with the pattern of NetherRealm following up its Mortal Kombat releases with an Injustice game and explain why the developer would want to keep its latest release separate from the anniversary celebrations.

However, there has been a lot of speculation that also points to the next game being Mortal Kombat 12, due to alleged uncertainty among NetherRealm over its future with WB Games. Whatever NetherRealm has up its sleeve, it seems fans won’t be finding out anything about the new title until the developer is ready to show it off. Despite multiple attempts from fans on Twitter to get him to speak about the upcoming game, Ed Boon’s lips remain sealed.
