These latest insights came from the Vic’s Basement podcast where host Victor Lucas had Ed Boon on to interview for Electric Playground Network about the current and upcoming state of Mortal Kombat 11. While the interview included Boon’s own signature interactions, like trolling Mileena comments, it also included an interesting announcement about new projects that players won’t even see for years.

When asked about how he moves on to future projects and updates without focusing on reworking the current build of titles like Mortal Kombat 11 along with community input, Boon made mention of more projects coming in the future. Specifically, he mentioned how NetherRealm Studios is currently working on projects that players won’t even see, let alone play, for years. This may tie into previous comments made by Boon that the studio is currently working on a game outside of the Mortal Kombat franchise.
Exactly what this new project is continues to remain a secret, and considering Boons comments that it will be some time until players even get a chance to see this upcoming game, it is likely in the very early stages of development. Boon did make it clear over the course of the interview that while he is excited to speak more on the upcoming projects being worked on at NetherRealm, both Mortal Kombat related and otherwise, he unfortunately couldn’t go into further detail. The same red tape seemed to tie his hands on an answer to a question from a fan about the likelihood of introducing The Evil Dead’s Ash Williams to Mortal Kombat 11, which Boon clearly wanted to elaborate on.
As is often the case with these in-depth interviews, there are plenty of insights that Boon can give about development, but there is a lot that industry standards and marketing strategies will force him to hold his tongue. Developers often can’t be too specific about upcoming projects, in many cases as a way to temper fan anticipation when a game’s release is a ways down the road. However, Boon certainly took the opportunity to give fans a great inside look at what’s available in the Aftermath DLC for players to get excited about.
Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
