These characters have some of the scariest laughs in the anime world. Most are evil, but there are a few of them that skate the fine line between heroism and villainy. If any of these characters starts laughing, it’s best to get away from them as quickly as possible.
10 Light Yagami (Death Note)
Any Death Note fan knew that if Light was laughing, someone was going to die, or he killed someone. He has plenty of laughs throughout the series, but there are two moments that really stand out. First, his laugh at L’s grave was utterly terrifying because this marked that Light had no one blocking him from his goals. In the end, he’d won the battle of wits between them and saw this as his best victory.
His other notorious laugh is when he was finally caught and told everyone his plans. It was clear that Light wasn’t going to make it out alive one or another, but hearing him laugh left fans on edge to see what he’d do next.
9 Mad Pierrot (Cowboy Bebop)
For only appearing in one episode, Mad Pierrot has become pretty iconic for various reasons. From the way he moves, his clown-esque attire, and overall character arc made him one of the best villains in Cowboy Bebop. If seeing him didn’t send chills down the spines of viewers then his laugh certainly did. It was maniacal, twisted, and creepy, and even Spike was scared of this guy.
Spike is not one to be scared easily and he’s an experienced bounty hunter, but it’s safe to say he was outmatched. Even with Faye’s help, the two of them only made it out alive through luck. Either way, Mad Pierrot is sure to live on in the minds of fans forever.
8 Frieza (Dragon Ball Z)
Frieza is so iconic for just how evil and ruthless he is in the Dragon Ball series. He’s wiped out entire planets and enslaved any survivors, and there’s not many who can stop him. While he does have some laughs throughout the whole series, nothing compares to his laugh when he wiped out Planet Vegeta. The laugh he let out as his Supernova got bigger then made its way to the planet was just pure evil.
He continued laughing after Planet Vegeta was destroyed and reveled in his victory. Even after being brought back as an ally of sorts in Dragon Ball Super, Frieza is still terrifying to have around and his laughter is still scary to hear.
7 Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)
Yuno is basically the queen of yandere females in the anime world, so it shouldn’t be surprising that she has a scary laugh to match. Yuno is known for being cold and mentally-unstable, but she’s very calculating when it comes to her plans. If fans thought an angry Yuno is the scariest thing to witness, her laugh is just absolutely scary and bone-chilling.

If she’s laughing, chances are that someone is about to get seriously hurt or die. It usually doesn’t bode well if Yuno is around, but it’s definitely frightening if she starts laughing and gets that crazy yandere look on her face.
6 Hidan (Naruto Shippuden)
The Naruto series has plenty of villains that are scary, but Hidan is something else. This man was just so sadistic, arrogant, and insane that fans were happy when Shikamaru defeated him. Hearing him laugh as he fought against Asuma and used the Curse Technique: Death Controlling Possessed Blood jutsu was beyond scary. Fans could only watch in horror as Hidan caused harm to himself, which didn’t do anything to him thanks to immortality, while Asuma was the one who truly suffered the injuries.
Hidan clearly didn’t care who suffered from his jutsu and clearly enjoyed watching his victims suffer. He might not have been the strongest villain in the overall series, but it can’t be denied that Hidan was one of the creepiest and most terrifying.
5 Donquixote Doflamingo (One Piece)
One Piece has plenty of villains that are scary, but Doflamingo is on a whole other level. Arrogant and prideful with a bloodthirsty mentality, he’s extremely cruel and sadistic that almost everyone who knows him fears him. He laughs when he sees others in pain and enjoys it when others are injured. If he sees that something bad is about to happen, he’ll laugh and lick his lips in anticipation.
Even if he’s in the middle of a battle and destruction is happening all around, Doflamingo will laugh and act like nothing’s wrong. Not many characters will go against him since he is pretty powerful and very few can stand on equal grounds with him.
4 Yami Marik (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Yami Bakura might’ve been the longest villain in the series, but Yami Marik was far scarier than he could ever be. His host Marik started off innocent and just wanted to experience life, but his father refused to let him and Ishizu have any freedom. This personality manifested from Marik’s pain and Yami Marik loved causing it.

He enjoyed torturing anyone who stood in his way even if it was Marik himself. He got more maniacal as time went on, and his laugh was bone-chilling. It also didn’t help that the look on his face looked just as scary, especially with the veins getting more and more prominent.
3 Rena Ryuugu (Higurashi When They Cry)
Out of all the characters in the series, Rena laughing is just scarier than other characters like Shion. She looks innocent and sweet, and she can be. However, she can be very scary when she’s angry. Her laugh starts off as sweet, but it’s her actions and the changing tone to being terrifying that makes Rena stand out.
Just because she looks cute doesn’t mean anyone should underestimate her. If anyone crosses her, Rena can go from having a normal conversation to having her hands around someone’s throat in an instant and she’ll laugh while doing so.
2 Alucard (Hellsing)
Alucard definitely skates the fine line between being a hero and a villain, but there’s no denying that he’s a scary man. He’s already a tough opponent to fight, and there’s many people who have the means to kill him. Whenever Alucard laughs, fans know that he’s about to cause a world of pain for whoever is fighting him.
It also doesn’t help that all of his teeth are sharpened and make him look like something out of a nightmare. It’s a good thing he’s on the side of stopping others from taking over the world, but it doesn’t make him any less scary.
1 Dio Brando (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Dio is the most notorious villain in the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure series so of course he has a scary laugh. It might not sound like anything special at first, but the fact that Dio is just pure evil makes it scary. He has no redeeming qualities and loves making the Joestar family miserable. Everywhere he goes, Dio causes mayhem and destruction, and he loves every second of it.
Granted, Dio did have a tough childhood before being adopted into the Joestar family, but that doesn’t excuse or justify all the wrong he’s done. Fans couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief that Jotaro finally defeated this horrible and twisted man once and for all.
