These frustrating missions seen in the Metal Gear Saga are not reserved for just one game, but each game features an annoying or frustrating mission that can be rather grueling to get through.
8 Communications Towers – Metal Gear Solid
When the Metal Gear series transitioned into 3D environments, the stealth genre for video games would never be the same. Metal Gear Solid revolutionized the way games were played, but even with high praise, there were complaints about the frustration of some missions. One of the most difficult is that of the Communications Towers segment.
This segment of the game requires the player to find the location of the Rope, as it is mandatory for this section of the game. There are three Communication Towers, and it can be rather tedious navigating them all with the abundance of staircases, enemies, and items needed to progress.
7 Tailing The Resistance – Metal Gear Solid 4
In many games, there are few things that players like less than tailing missions. The reason is, that the player is limited and is forced into playing a segment that prevents their movement or skill from progressing. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has these tailing missions, in which the player needs to follow a resistance member.
The mission follows Old Snake as he trails a member of the resistance so that Old Snake can find the location of the resistance base. However, the resistance member will turn around every so often, and even be alerted if Old Snake is too fast, or gets too close. The result is frequent restarts and a frustrating display of patience.
6 A Quiet Exit – Metal Gear Solid 5
Players can develop a bond between Big Boss and Quiet in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. This bond, influenced by taking Quiet out as a buddy on missions, will later unlock the mission “A Quiet Exit.” During this mission, players who have developed strong ties to Quiet will feel a strong sense of urgency when it comes to saving her.
This mission can be frustrating to players, as there is an abundance of tanks, enemies with machine guns, and a lot of firepower. Resources are scarce, and players looking for a non-lethal approach will fight for their lives. Even the players who will shoot anything will find themselves running out of equipment, fast.
5 Backup, Backdown – Metal Gear Solid 5
Considering Metal Gear Solid 5 is the first time the series goes open-world, some missions can be frustrating for utilizing the entirety of the map. “Backup, Backdown” requires Venom Snake to destroy or Fulton seven Armored vehicles. Vehicles that are protected by jeeps, CGM launchers, and difficult roads.
Players seeking the S-Rank for each Metal Gear mission will find this one difficult, as they will need to complete each of the seven Armored vehicles without being detected. With a time limit, and a lack of options to get from place to place, this mission can be exceptionally frustrating.
4 Escorting EVA – Metal Gear Solid 3
Escort missions are never fun, no matter the video game. Players often like experiencing story games alone, and only having to rely on themselves, and without the need to protect others that will get in their way. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater features an escort mission for the character EVA.

The problem players have with EVA and this mission is that the AI is rather buggy, and will walk at a snail’s pace. Whilst guards run, chase, and shoot, EVA’s AI seems confused about what to do. The infinite spawning guards certainly get in the way of EVA’s progression, as she fails to keep moving.
3 The Body-Snatchers – Metal Gear Solid 5
When Big Boss received an urgent request to investigate unusual activity at the U.S. Naval facility in Cuba, he soon found himself against Body Snatchers. This creepy sci-fi mission follows Big Boss as he stealths his way through a base and discovers the unknown entities that steal the identities of soldiers on the base.
In a twist, players will become Raiden, but to their frustration, the mission doesn’t do anything unique. Players will sneak around the base in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, looking for normal enemies to eliminate, just like the other missions.
2 The Caves – Metal Gear Solid 3
After a battle with Ocelot, Naked Snake retreats and falls into some caverns that are filled with water. The biggest frustration that awaits players in the cave segments of Metal Gear Solid 3 hinges on if they missed the Thermal Goggles. Seeing in the caves is almost impossible, and the map is not much help.

The darkness can be cured with the Thermal Goggles or even a Torch, but both can be easily missed as they are not given to the player from the beginning of the game and must be found. The caves may lack enemies, but the darkness is the worst enemy yet.
1 Escorting Emma – Metal Gear Solid 2
Combine the two most hated things in gaming: escort missions and underwater levels, and players will bare witness to one of the most frustrating missions in the Metal Gear franchise. In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, players are tasked with escorting Otacon’s sister, Emma, back to safety through the disaster of the Big Shell Incident.
Players will have to navigate through waters, and the dangers within them, all while making sure Emma isn’t drifting away, or too scared to continue. It’s a frustrating mission, as players need to be patient with both the AI and the level layout.
