What Medications Are Similar?
Medications similar to Motegrity include:
Zelnorm (tegaserod) Linzess (linaclotide) Amitiza (lubiprostone)
Zelnorm (tegaserod)
Tegaserod is approved only in adult women under 65 with constipation-dominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). It works similarly to Motegrity by binding serotonin type-4 (5-HT4) receptors to stimulate gut motility.
Tegaserod is taken twice daily, which can be more burdensome than Motegrity. Avoid tegaserod if you have ever had a heart attack, stroke, angina, intestinal ischemia, liver or kidney disease, and those with a history of bowel obstruction, active gallbladder disease, or suspected dysfunction with your sphincter of Oddi.
Linzess (linaclotide)
Linaclotide treats IBS-C and chronic idiopathic constipation in adults. It increases intestinal fluid secretion and movement by targeting guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) receptors. Those with any intestinal blockage should not take this medication.
Amitiza (lubiprostone)
Lubiprostone is a prescription laxative medication in the class of drugs known as prostaglandins. It is approved to treat adults with long-term constipation and IBS-C in women.
Lubiprostone increases the amount of fluid in the bowels by boosting chloride production in the intestine. This helps soften the stool, allowing it to pass more easily. It is uncertain if this medication is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid Amitiza if you have a bowel obstruction or severe diarrhea.
